Every health-concious kitchen should have one
I had been looking for a kitchen scale for a while, most were too large, too complex or just too expensive. As an afterthought when ordering other non-related items, searched and found this Etekcity compact scale. So for the price and free shipping, why not?
The scale it well boxed, engineered and manufactured, and using it is simplicity itself. Even the 2 AAA batteries are included. Just pop them in, press the right-hand "On" button and voilá. The left-hand button changes the units. Especially handy is the simple tare-weight setup. Press the "On" button to turn on the scale, place a plate or bowl on the scale, press the "On" button again, and the scale is reset to zero so you can accurately weigh, for instance, 100 gms of chicken, cottage cheese, hamburger or strawberries so you can verify your nutrition requirements.
For sure I will be ordering more of these Etekcity scales to be shipped to family and friends for birthdays and Christmas. Also have several other Etekcity products on my "Wish List" to combine with my next fan-key order.

The good: easy to clean
I wish kitchen scale manufacturers would stop worrying about battery life if we don't shut the scale off! What other battery powered device do you own that shuts itself off? Ridiculous. The first scale manufacturer that drops this "feature" will gain all market share. The good: easy to clean. The bad. If you have something on the scale and it shuts itself off, you can't proceed with what you were doing without first taking the bowl off of the scale before putting it back on. If you don't remove it, you get an error message when it powers up again. Major annoyance! Also, it is slow to come back on. So a process that should be trouble free (add ingredient/tare/add ingredient/tare) becomes: hurry up before it shuts itself off or push on it to keep it awake while you scramble to add a new ingredient. Not impressed.

For fun, I weighed the manual for this scale - ...
I am impressed by this kitchen scale. After opening the box, I found a plastic bag that contained -2- replacement batteries for this unit.
For fun, I weighed the manual for this scale - and guess what? The scale weighed the 4 or 5 page manual (4" x 7" - approximately)
This will suit my purpose for both cooking - it has mL as well as the ounces, grams and pounds measurement on the scale.
Also, the platform is large enough to do a tare weight and still see the numbers.
The platform surface is flat - big enough for most needs.
Also, if you register your warranty on their website, you gain an additional 1 year on the warranty.

Great For Homemade Soap Making!
I paid around $10.00 for this scale and it does what I want it to do. I make homemade soap and like that I can measure out my oils, fats, water, lye, scents, etc... in ounces or grams. It goes up to 11 pounds so I don't have to worry about overloading it. I had been using a postal scale before I got this little scale and the postal scale would lock in at a weight before I could even finish making my measurements which drove me nuts and the reason for buying this Etekcity scale. It stays open and allows me to slowly continue adding or removing whatever it is that I'm measuring. I don't have to worry about it locking in at a weight since it doesn't seem to lock in at all, which is very good. It will not weigh in parts of a gram but in whole grams only. That's fine since my measurements don't have to be that precise. It's easy to tare, and really, I can find nothing to complain about. It's small and doesn't take up hardly any counter space and it even comes with two AAA batteries. Perfect for my soap making needs!
UPDATE 12.4.15 - I've been using this scale a LOT especially for measuring out my soap ingredients and I haven't even had to change the batteries yet. I love this little scale and am very glad I bought it! It works great!

Not a user friendly scale
I would not recommend this scale. It seems to weigh things accurately (I only use it for food), but the buttons are a pain to use, and they don't register touch very well. When trying to zero out the scale with a bowl on it using the 'Tare' function, I sometimes have to hit the button 3-4 times before it registers. Same goes when switching units, or trying to turn it off. It's pretty frustrating sitting there trying to hit a button repeatedly that won't register. The auto-off feature is also a real pain, since it is set to a relatively short period of time. When adding ingredients one at a time (i.e. to a salad) and tracking the weight of each item, the scale often turns off in the middle of what I'm doing. Not impressed with this at all, and wouldn't buy again.

One Small Problem on a Great Product
There are things that are wonderful about this scale. It's very accurate, easy to wipe off, simple to use, the display numbers are a good size so they are easy to read, the display stays on for about a minute so you don't have to worry about it timing out on you.
That being said, there is definitely a drawback with the scale. If you put a dinner plate or wide rimmed bowl on the scale you can't see the display. This is extremely annoying. I want to put my plate on the scale and be able to portion out my meal without dirtying another dish. Even my smaller salad plate covers the display because I have a wide rim on my dishes. It's my own fault for not thinking of this issue before purchasing the scale, that's why I write about it here.
Honestly, this scale is great in so many ways. You just have to figure out what you will be using it for and decide if it's the right fit for your needs.

Buttons don't always want to cooperate
Kinda fidgety and the battery dies faster than my previous Etekcity scale. But! Very easy to clean and use larger bowls. I like that it's simple to switch between weights, but the Zero-out part could use some work. If my fingers are wet, it just likes to register the pressure rather than zero-out.

Nice design, weighs correctly and great price. The on/off procedure requires getting used to.

Unusable! Came with two sets of batteries both failed to work, scale continually says Lo. Didn't even stay on long enough to change unit of measurement. Bought 6 new batteries an additional $13 and same results. This particular scale is garbage.

A great little asset for your kitchen, and health
I ordered this product to go with my new fitbit charge. Counting calories accurately is most easily done by weighing your food. Right out of the box, this product was very easy to set up. You can study the unit of measure by scrolling through your options with the touch of a button. The unit is small, but this is a great advantage for taking it with you to the office. However at this price, I'd buy another for that purpose. This would also be helpful when using a recipe that calls for ingredients in "grams," something I run into when talking to my European relatives. There are instructions for using the "TARE" function, which considers the weight of your container when weighing. The maximum weight for the scale is 11.02 pounds, so keep in mind that this is for personal, home use. Overall, this product is a great value for anyone needing a kitchen scale.
