Even a beginner can do it...just take some deep breathes and do it!
At first, I was terrified of this machine, but it really has turned out to be wonderful! I'm still pretty much a beginner. Mostly self taught with some long distance guidance from my great-grandmother-in-law. This really has rounded out my projects and certainly gives them a nice, finished look ( if not professional). I found a tip somewhere that recommended keeping a journal with samples of material with the various stitches and settings written down. This has saved me so much time!

Let me first start by saying thank you to amazon for having such great customer service. I ran into issues wit my order and they easily fixed it, even though it was completely my fault.
As for the serger, I can't be more pleased. My last serger was an ancient fossil and this was definitely in my budget range.
Sergers have a way of being extremely difficult to thread, to my surprise this one came already threaded. So I re-threaded it by just working my way backwards which was extremely easy.
This comes with great instructions and even a DVD to help demonstrate the different mechanics.
I was honestly threaded and running in less then 15 minutes. I'm really impressed with this machine.

Great for a beginner!
I've never used a serger before and I've only been sewing for a few years, but my mom gave me money to get a serger as a pre-baby gift. I've been coveting a serger, any serger, for several months now so I was so excited to try it out. I have to say, I did lots of research and the reviews made me very hesitant to buy this serger, but I'm all about buying from brick and mortar stores for major purchases such as this one. It was on sale and I figured it wouldn't be too tough to return if I decided I didn't like it. So, this is the one I got since it was the only one I could afford that was available in my teeny, tiny town.
Thankfully, I was VERY pleasantly surprised. It's heavy enough that it feels very sturdy, but light enough to be very portable. (that's great for me since I don't have a permanent sewing station in my home) When I got it home, I decided to try to rethread it right away, since that seems to be a major complaint about most sergers, and it took me about 10 minutes following the instructions on the machine and in the manual. Since then, I've had no trouble rethreading following just the machines color coded instructions when changing from 3 to 4 threads and back. And that doesn't seem to take any longer than my regular sewing machine.
Some reviewers have complained about the noise of this machine, but I'm not sure what you are expecting. It's much quieter than my cheap White sewing machine and my one-year-old has no trouble sleeping in the next room while I'm working with it.
The stitches are very smooth and once I adjusted to the speed of the machine (it goes much faster than sewing) I've been very pleased with the finished products. Within the first hour or so of trying it out, I had mastered a 3-thread rolled hem and standard 4-thread overlock stitch, the two stitches I most wanted the machine for.
Anyway, don't let the negative reviews scare you out of getting this machine. It's very simple to learn how to use and makes beautiful stitches. I honestly can't find anything to complain about.

Broken after 2 months, horrible customer service
After only owning my SINGER ProFinish 2-3-4 Thread Serger for two months an internal metal part broke making it completely unusable. To comply with Singer's 90 day warranty I took it to the only repair shop close to Houston they have available. To make a long story short a repair date of 3 weeks has turned into 3 months later and my machine hasn't even been touched. Of course now the 90 day warranty has passed or I could have returned it on fan-key. We contacted Singer to complain and still no date has been given as to when my machine will be fixed. They also seem to have gone back on their inital statement of giving me a replacement unit instead of waiting for the part to come in. Since I need this machine to run my business it has been a real problem financially and just plain wrong in an ethical sense.
Singer could not repair our machine and ended up replacing it. The second machine developed the same problem within 45 days of receiving it. Unfortunately, Singer did not re-start our 90 day warranty with the second machine so by the time the second machine broke we were outside of the remaining 30 days of the 90 day warranty.

NOT what I'd hoped for!
I rated this with three stars because my issues were possibly my fault. Many people seem to have good things to say about this machine.
I have used the Brother 1034d for several years. When I decided to get a new serger, I thought I'd try a different brand, and maybe eliminate the few (very few) issues I had with it. Long story short, I couldn't get the tensions right on this machine. Ever. The settings are a little different from the Brother, and I used the book, with no success. I'm not sure why, but sometimes the knives just didn't cut, and the fabric would bunch terribly. The other thing I didn't like and just couldn't get used to is the presser foot lever. The Brother has it on the right side of the machine, which makes sense to me, as most people guide the fabric with the left hand. This Singer's presser foot lever is at the back, on the left side. Just doesn't work for me. I finally gave up and bought another Brother 1034d, and have discovered a new love and appreciation for it after the Singer experience. The Brother is also heavier and doesn't jump around like the Singer does, even with suction feet. They're equally noisy, which I understand is just what you get with most sergers. I hope to get a Babylock someday, but in the meanwhile I'm much happier with the 1034d. The Singer is now listed on Craigslist for sale. Lesson learned!

This one is terrible. Let me list all the reasons why
I wish I had listened to everyone who said to spend a little more and get a serger of decent quality. This one is terrible. Let me list all the reasons why:
-For every half hour I spend on this machine, twenty minutes of it is rethreading. The thread jumps out of multiple tracks when running, and rethreading is an absolute nightmare. Parts of the rethreading process are recessed inside the case where you can't see, so getting the thread seated is a matter of pulling and hoping it catches. Plus, the instructions leave out critical parts, like how the second looper thread lays with the first looper, and so on. Areas you can't reach are behind obstructions so you can't get the tweezers back there either. Good luck rethreading at all if you're left handed.
-The parts are cheap. I work with 5.3oz medium weight linen. If I put more than 3 layers through at a time, the blade breaks. I run six layers through other models with no problem.
-The suction cups on bottom don't work and the serger travels all over the table. I have to hold the top with one hand and feed fabric with the other.
-The troubleshooting guide is laughably unhelpful. Out of the box, it wouldn't do a 4 thread stitch at all and it took a Youtube video from someone else with the same model showing how to set the tensions right.
Seriously, spend more and get a higher quality model. I've seen the difference and it's worth it.

Serger Does Not Work
I purchased this serger in March for my wife's birthday, but because she had broken her leg this past winter, she was not able to use it until just recently. She spent hours attempting to get it to work properly, watching the enclosed videos, and reviewing youtube help videos before she took it to a local sewing store for help. After two hours with a sewing expert attempting to get it to work, she finally gave up. The serger will start to properly finish the edge of the cloth but after about 4 or 5 inches, the overcast stitch fails. Unfortunately, we are beyond the 30 day return date.
My wife sews for charity and has a project that has been waiting for a serger and this Singer machine is useless. Our only option is to purchase a different unit. Needless to say I am more than a bit disappointed.
My advice... Don't buy serger like this from fan-key. Go to your local sewing store and buy your product there. They will likely be able to help you get started and will probably have a more liberal return policy should something be wrong with the product.

Love this machine. Should have bought it sooner. :)
I LOVE IT!!!! It worked perfect right out of the box. I have never used a serger before and was a little timid at first. I had some dresses I wanted to make for my grand daughter and took a sample piece of fabric to test the serger (and myself) out and it worked perfectly. I didn't need to change any of the settings. It came with four different colored threads already threaded. It also came with a user manual in paper form as well as on a CD with videos (which I had already watched on YouTube.com). I am now wondering if I will ever used my regular sewing machine again and why I waited so long to take the plunge on getting one. However, after making my first dress I realized I do still need my regular sewing machine. I have whipped out some curtains, dresses, and more and I have only had it for a couple of days. For me I choose this one over the Brother because it can do 2, 3, or 4 threads and the price was great. If you are shopping I highly recommend this one. Not sure why the negative reviews as I had not had any issues with my. If is a little heavier because it is make with more metal than plastic and so it should hold up better. It is no louder then my regular sewing machine so not sure why the negative review on that matter. And it cuts as it sews so yes it may be a little messy, but DUH! Buy it, you will love it. :)

So fun now that I taught myself to use it!
I love this machine!!! I kept putting off trying this out because I have a new baby in the house and I knew I would need to devote more time to trying this out than I could really give it at the time so it sat in its box until after the holidays. I had a plan to use this machine for quite some time and I finally decided it was now or never. Late at night, while the baby was fast asleep, I went ahead and read the manual for the Pro Finish. The next night, I went ahead and plugged it in and gave it a try with a piece of scrap material. I was so excited when I was able to say I finally edged my first piece. The machine came pre threaded which was incredibly helpful. Knowing which thread did what on my finished piece is what made me finally understand what was happening since each of the 4 threads were different colors and color coded to the machine. So the 3rd night, I changed the thread by following the instructions in the book, I learned that you tie on to the existing threads in order to change colors and pull it through which is so much easier than rethreading from scratch. I surged 12 burp cloths in about 35 minutes and my machine started smoking. I realized I was running it just a little too fast for a little too long. Tonight when I edged a blanket for my husband that I have been promising to do for a couple of months now, I took my time and ran the machine at a normal steady pace and it did not overheat at all. I love this machine so much, my entire family will be getting new blankets for Christmas this year. I purchased this product for full price.

Such a finished look...
I thought I loved sewing but this serger just solidified that thought. I love the finished look this serger provides and it's so compact. The serger came with starter thread (which I replaced because I design clothes) and a CD that showed you everything you need to know about how to use it. All in all, I'd recommend this serger two and three times over!
